What the land Remembers

An Chead Tine Gallery

Solo exhibition by Diane Henshaw

Curated by Mary Doyle in association with Science Week Ireland and CALMAST, SETU.

Opening at An Chéad Tine in November, What the Land Remembers explores our relationship with landscape, water and the natural world. Drawing on ideas from Jane Bennett’s writing on vibrant matter, Henshaw considers how land, plants, minerals and water shape the places we inhabit and the stories they hold.

Working with drawing, natural pigments, earth-derived materials and handmade inks, Henshaw uses materials gathered from the landscape, including water collected from the ocean and land, and moisture extracted from plants. These materials become part of the work itself, connecting each piece to its source.

Alchemy is central to this process: natural materials are gathered, mixed and transformed through the act of making. The work also raises questions about water guardianship, our responsibility to protect water as a vital shared resource, and the connections between water, biodiversity and the health of our landscapes.

In keeping with Science Week Ireland 2026’s focus on water, the exhibition invites us to look more closely at the natural processes that sustain life and to consider how we might better care for the environments on which we depend.
